That depends on what your fitness goals are.
Are you just working out or are you training?
A workout is cardio or strength training (or both) that will raise your heart rate, increase bone density, ward off depression, keep or add to the muscle mass that you have, and generally point you in the direction of becoming a healthier happier person. That can be 2-4 times a week.
Training means that there is a specific life event that you are competing in. Training can even make you less healthy.  The goal of training is to win.  If one is training for a competition you have to push or work around injuries.  Be able to break through comfort zones and have strong mental prowess.  Just ask any athlete what training is like for game day.  Ask any fitness competitor how grueling the gym and diet regimen can be before posing on stage. Training isn’t necessarily a healthy endeavor.
If you are training for something specific (depending on what that is), your training frequency can be  5-7 days a week and sometimes even twice a day until the day of the completion.
